Dartmouth swimming debate gets underway

30th May 2008

A landmark meeting between South Hams District Council and Dartmouth Town Council has taken place (Wednesday 28 May) to consider swimming provision in the town.

District council leader Cllr John Tucker, fellow district councillors and Dartmouth Town Councillors reviewed the outcomes from the town council's ISRM Swimming Pool Study along with the district council's Strategic Swimming Study, which looked at proposals for facilities across the South Hams, including the proposed new community at Sherford and the outdoor pool at Ivybridge.

The purpose of the meeting was to exchange ideas between interested parties and identify any issues which might prevent a project working for Dartmouth.

Cllr Tucker said: "This was a very constructive meeting and I'm pleased that we are now engaged with the town council to address the desire of Dartmouth people for a pool".

Cllr Debbie Morris, Mayor of Dartmouth Town Council, said: "We intend to work with the District Council to ensure a realistic approach can be achieved to improve swimming provision in the town."

Officers from both the district and town councils will be working on the financial requirement needed to make improvements for swimming in Dartmouth.

Further work will will also be needed to assess the capital investment required as well as the detail of ongoing running costs in order for each authority to make appropriate budget plans for any forthcoming projects.
